6-7.7.2012 The Wife Carrying World Championships, Sonkajärvi

In Upper Savo, in a place called Sonkajärvi, the life gets utmost wild along the international sports game when the Wife Carrying World Championships are arranged at the place. Throughout the event joy and humour are giving strength for both competition participants and the audience enjoying the event. The wife carrying world championships are a humoristic sports event arranged in Sonkajärvi since the year 1992. The history of the competition is based on the events of the local history of Sonkajärvi during 1700-1800 centuries whereby the famous robber chief Ronkainen with his robber gang was living in the area. Robber Ronkainen with his robber gang was testing new men coming to the robber gang so that they had to show their manhood by running the rye sack on their back on a field and in forest over stones, fences and brooks. The gang of the robber chief made long plundering expeditions up to Russian Karelia carrying therefrom among the other loot also eligible housewives to their home farms.More information:www.eukonkanto.fi/en

 A Festival of Finnish Schlager Music at Kiuruvesi in July has established its position as a top event of the Finnish popular music. Atmosphere and casual country atmosphere in the Upper Savo are collecting yearly hundreds of caravanners and nearly 35000 concert visitors. The events offer every year brilliant variety of leading performers of the Finnish popular music and splendid concerts.
